Smart Application–Picle

 

Picle is a free app for iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch that works well for putting images and audio together to create digital stories or multimedia projects. Images can be imported from the camera roll. Or, pictures can be taken directly by the app with the iDevice’s built-in camera. Then by clicking a record-button you can attach audio narration or other desired sounds to the image. You can also record whatever sound is present when the picture is taken while taking a picture to capture. Each image, with attached audio, is known as a ‘picle’. Individual picles can be woven together into movies that tell a story. These movies can be uploaded and shared on Picle’s site. Or, movies can be saved to the camera roll and sent from there directly to Youtube, on your blog or emailed. Individual picles can also be shared on their own.

I particulary like to use this application in language learning and reading. Children can take pictures of different things and say a few words about them in the language they are learning. As a fun way to teach reading, they can take the picture of some text written in other languages and record themselves reading it. My children are also using it in making tajweed videos by taking pictures of different words and verses from the Quraan and explaining the tajweed rules in the voice recording. children can also take pictures of their art work and record themselves explaining it. This application presents many wonderful opportunities and since it is so easy to use, it can be used by even very young children.

Tajweed Interactives – Rules for the Name of Allaah(swt)

 

A complete lesson regarding the rule of Laam in the Exalted name of Allaah (swt). Again its an interactive designed in Power Point. Lesson includes the rules, an interactive quiz to check understanding and a glossary of the terms used. Please make duaa for my kids who very enthusiastically contributed the voice files.

You can use the interactive online from here, but I would recommend downloading the Power Point file from here as the online version is not very good at preserving sound files. If you do not have MS Power Point on your system, you can download the free viewer from here. You can also download this free software which is a good alternative to MS Office and supports the files in MS Office formats as well.

Tajweed Interactives – Izhaar Lesson 1

This is the first lesson for the rule of Izhaar (Clear). It is a quiz style interactive designed in PowerPoint. You can download it from here. Tajweed Interactives

The word Tajweed linguistically means “proficiency” or doing something well. When applied to Quraan, it means giving every letter of the Quraan its rights and dues of characteristics when we recite Quraan and observing the rules that apply to those letters in different situations. Majority of scholars agree that applying the rules of Tajweed while reciting Quraan is an obligation (Fardh)

When teaching young children to recite Quraan, its not necessary to teach them the rules themselves (provided they are reciting the proper way even though they do not know the rules themselves), but it is always good to do so. As far as the children are able to recite the Quraan properly, we can leave teaching the rules, but as soon as you feel that the child is ready you must teach them the proper rules. In this way we ensure that later in life he/she would always be able to recite correctly and check/balance him/herself.

When I started teaching my 7 year old the rules of Tajweed, I felt that he did not look forward to learning Tajweed as much as other subjects. Also that it was a bit hard for him to remember the rules and apply them. To make his learning engaging and more interactive, I designed an interactive activity for him. The result was instant success. So I am sticking to this method of teaching Tajweed. For the benefit of those who have computer loving kids, I will be sharing these activities, Insha Allaah. May Allaah accept and make our children true assets of this Ummaah. AAmeen.

Please note that these activities are just an aid in the process of learning and can not take place of a teacher. Along with a teacher and these activities there are a few more tips on learning Tajweed for children:

1. Learn one rule at a time and until the child is not proficient in applying it in his/her daily Quraan recitations do not proceed to next.

2. Listen to Quraan recitation audios by Quraa who recite slowly and clearly. Its always a good idea to listen to the portion of Quraan from an expert Qaari before reading it yourself. Try to copy them, and pay special attention to how they pronounce each word. Draw the attention of the child towards the particular rule he/she is learning.

3. Apply the rules they learn to the suraas they have already memorized. Even if it takes a long time, first correct the memorized suraas before proceeding to memorize next one.

4. Practice and repetition is the key insha Allaah.
